FIRST IN PHOTONICS
The PHDIS-04 photon spinner from Becker and Hickl enables the connection of one detector, e.g. HPM-100 series high speed hybrid detector, with four SPC-150N time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) modules.
A FLIM system set up with the photon spinner achieves ultra high time resolution, and very high count rate at the same time.
When the first card after a photon is recorded is in dead time, the task to count further photons is done by the next card, etc. This procedure reduces the dead time of the TCSPC electronics a lot. As a result, the system can handle very high photon count rates without any notable losses. And the good thing about that, the system can do so without losing its high time resolution, i.e. the timing jitter is still 3ps root mean square (RMS) with SPC-150N cards. Thus, with 3ps RMS timing jitter the system can handle 16MHz of sustained photon counting rate on a single detector, even peak rates of 30MHz.
